Density of states

In solid. In crystalline solids, there are often energy ranges where the density of electron states is zero, which means that the electrons cannot be excited to these energies. The density of states also occurs in Fermi's golden rule, which describes how fast quantum-mechanical transitions occur in the presence of a perturbation.
