Neutron scattering

The term "Neutron Scattering" encompasses all scientific techniques whereby the deflection of neutron radiation is used as a scientific probe. It falls into two basic categories - elastic and inelastic scattering. Elastic scattering is when a neutron interacts with a nucleus but does not leave the nucleus in an excited state, rather like a billiard ball. Scattering processes that involve nuclear excitation by the neutron are inelastic.
